General Description

The Family and Consumer Sciences Specialized Teacher Certification in Human Development and Family Studies offers the opportunity to teach only human development and family studies courses at grades 8-12 in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

All undergraduate students seeking initial Texas teacher certification through Texas Woman’s University must complete the Education Minor. Requirements for Certification:

1.  Admission to Teacher Education requires:

  • GPA 2.75 (minimum)
  • TASP/THEA minimum scores (Reading = 260; Math = 240; Writing = 240) OR Accuplacer minimum scores (Reading = 80; Math = 65; Writing-Sentence = 82; Writing-Essay = 6)
  • TExES - Pedagogy & Professional Responsibility minimum score of 240 and AAFCS - Texas Teacher Certification Version – Family & Consumer Sciences Composite Examination.
  • Demonstration of Oral Communication Proficiency

2.  Teacher certification candidates must pass a basic literacy (TASP/THEA OR Accuplacer) test, the TExES test in Secondary Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility, and the AAFCS/CFC – Texas Teacher Certification Version - for the content field in which the candidate intends to teach.  A successful passing score on the AAFCS/TX Content Examination leads to the Certified Family and Consumer Sciences credential.

3.  No grade below a C will be accepted for course work completed in major or minor.

4.  Successful completion of student teaching is a requirement for Family and Consumer Science majors.

The B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences has been approved by the National Council on Family Relations as meeting the Standards and Criteria required for the Provisional Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation.  Above courses must be completed in order to qualify for the abbreviated CFLE application process.
