The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, is an interdisciplinary program that provides versatility for adult learners and part-time students who need a flexible curriculum designed to balance work and life responsibilities with educational goals. The BGS degree may be completed 100% online, or on the Denton campus in a face-to-face format.

Concentration areas may be selected from the following disciplines:

  • Multicultural Women's and Gender Studies*

Concentration areas may be selected from the following disciplines with approval from the BGS program:

  • Dance
  • Family Studies
  • Human Services
  • Kinesiology
  • Music
  • Natural Sciences
  • Professional Education

In order for these concentration areas to be considered for General Studies, students must have already successfully completed at least 12 semester credit hours of 3000- or 4000-level courses in the discipline.

The General Studies Program may allow additional concentration areas on a case-by-case basis and with departmental approval; students must have successfully completed at least 12 semester credit hours of 3000- or 4000-level courses in the discipline in order for any additional concentration areas to be considered for General Studies.

Marketable Skills

Defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's 60x30 Strategic Plan as, "Those skills valued by employers that can be applied in a variety of work settings, including interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skills areas. These skills can be either primary or complementary to a major and are acquired by students through education, including curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities."

Major/Emphasis

Total semester credit hours for major courses: 36 semester credit hours divided between 2 or 3 concentration areas. Concentration area courses must be 3000-4000 level. Grade of C or higher required in all concentration area courses.
