Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Teaching STEM in Deaf Education

This 15 semester credit hour certificate facilitates integration of methodological approaches for teaching STEM content within environments for students who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH). The program includes online academic coursework and a practicum experience. The certificate program is offered to students enrolled in TWU's M.S. in Education of the Deaf program and to certified teachers of the deaf who are teaching STEM and want a focus in deaf ed STEM instruction.

Marketable Skills

Defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's 60x30 Strategic Plan as, "Those skills valued by employers that can be applied in a variety of work settings, including interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skills areas. These skills can be either primary or complementary to a major and are acquired by students through education, including curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities."

  1. Effectively create evidence-based STEM learning opportunities for successfully educating children who are deaf/hard of hearing.
  2. Effectively teach STEM content to linguistically and culturally diverse students who are deaf/hard of hearing.

All students must meet the University requirements as outlined in the Admission to the TWU Graduate School section of the catalog.

Degree Requirements

Total Semester Credit Hours Required

15 semester credit hours (SCH).

The required coursework includes 12 SCH of online academic classes and 3 SCH of a practicum experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Program students must earn grades of A or B in all classes and successfully pass a practicum experience.
